The Journey of a Lifetime

My path to success is distinct and advanced with several unexpected yet welcomed opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. Throughout my career, I've always maintained an outstanding reputation of trust and loyalty. This is evidenced by frequent accolades associated with just 3 career companies for which I worked.  Two of which, I outlasted as they have since gone out of business.

Humble Beginnings

I started out working various part time jobs to offset the cost of attending RETS Electronic Engineering Technical College.  Tutoring math was fun.  As word spread that I was good at fixing broken analog TVs, I earned enough money to buy my very own Tektronix dual beam oscilloscope, and companion Fluke multimeter. I chose electronic diagnostic equipment over buying my first car.  I knew then I had discovered my passion for technology.

Field Service

Regional Customer Service

Upon graduating from the technical college,  I immediately was hired as a field service engineer for Telex Computer Products in Baltimore, MD.  The hiring manager Chris commented I must have a lot of confidence in myself to apply for a field service position without a car.  He trusted me enough to schedule my first two weeks tagging along with other field engineers, and the following two weeks attending corporate technical training.  By then I was able to pay $750 cash for a used, manual transmission Toyota Corolla Tercel.  I wouldn’t be surprised if that car is still on the road getting great gas mileage.

IBM Market Share

State of Maryland Tech Support

Telex eventually merged with Memorex and commanded 10% of the IBM mainframe computer market. The customer-facing aspect of field service has always appealed to my likes, whether on a raised computer room floor, or in a high-rise office environment.  I spent many late nights drinking vending machine coffee during scheduled computer maintenance windows.  My clients included SSA headquarters and various State of Maryland agencies.  In my role as tech support specialist, I often provided new product training and support.

Kokomo

Caribbean Islands Crisis Management

In 1989 I was selected to provide on-site technical training to our newly acquired Caribbean regional office in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  The reassignment was originally scheduled to last 3 months, however, the General Manager, Rafael extended an opportunity for a permanent position as the Regional Service Manager.  I flew throughout the islands to evaluate and eventually on-board distributor field service centers on 5 different islands.   I led disaster recovery efforts in San Juan, St. Thomas, and St. Croix, after the devastation of Hurricane Hugo. The Caribbean islands were my territory!

American Airlines International Accounts

North American Account Management

In 1992 I accepted a promotion and relocated to East Hartford, CT as the District Service Manager for the Southern New England Region.   2 years later I accepted an offer to transfer to Memorex Telex headquarters in Tulsa, OK as the American Airlines International Accounts Manager.  From Tulsa, I would travel to whichever country American Airlines and its travel agency company, STIN, was operating in Central and South America.

Transition Team

Intercontinental Connectivity

As Memorex Telex was being dissolved, I was selected to lead the 3-month transition team of existing service contracts to the buyer  The D1 transition ended on a Friday and the following Monday, I started working for  (LDDS Worldcom) in Tulsa OK.   The company was expanding rapidly through acquisitions of other telecoms and eventually became known as MCI Worldcom.  As the company grew larger, so did my role and responsibilities. When President Clinton visited one of our offices, I was lucky enough to be in the lobby when he spoke to employees. One of my most memorable programs as a Product Manager, was the joint venture with Cable and Wireless to build the GEMINI Undersea SONET ring fiber network which connected New York with London.

Out of This World

Solutions from Orbit

As a Sr. Program Manager at Hughes Network Systems, I managed large-scale national network rollouts for both government and enterprise clients.  The promotion to Program Director elevated my role to overseeing full contract lifecycle processes, including crafting bids, developing proposals, and responsible for contract renewals. My work involved leading cross-functional teams to deliver customized solutions across diverse business sectors,  from coordinating disaster relief efforts to implementing Wide Area Network (WAN) deployments and executing large-scale technology projects for federal agencies. Each step of my journey was marked by growing complexity and broader organizational impact.
